    Anyone seeing this?

For the last 3 months my forum has anywhere from 50 to 100 guests online all the time. Hit the all time high for users online today. The highest total seems to change once a week. The high number of guests started about a week after I installed the search engine friendly hack. These are not spiders however, although I have had spiders crawl the site, all the IPs are from ISPs.

Is anyone else seeing a higher than normal number of guests online?

I've had Googlebot visit a few times more often than recently and just had a swarm of unknown bots, but nothing that high. The most bots I've had on at once is 15.

A thought occurs: is somebody hotlinking attachments there? That would make the number of online guests surge.

Besides know bots, I would bet that someone has hotlinked or posted a link to on of your posts somewhere. It happened to my site several times, though the forum in question was one they had to register to see, it still showed these guests viewing that forum. It took several weeks before it ended.

After looking into it a little further my logs show that they are coming from Google, Altavista, Yahoo, AOL search and some of the smaller engines. These guests are going right into specific threads. The spider hack is working better than I thought it would. If you look at the who's online you'll see most of the guests reading different threads.
Truely amazing what this hack did for the popularity of the site. This also explains why I am getting so many new members signing up.
