Well, I've only used Linux (red hat) as a webserver thus far in my life, I've relied on Windows for all my "normal" tasks such as digital imaging or viewing other files.

I know Linux doens't support too much hardware, but does it support add-ons like Digital Cameras, Palms and MiniDiscs (every electronic I own is Sony (are there drivers for Sony products), except my stereo which is Bose and my computers which I build myself).

Actually Linux supports most hardware Windows support.

Linux supports everything you just mentioned. Some brands might be better supported then others so you just have to look around.

Personally though I recommend FreeBSD but that is my personal preference for a UNIX rather then Linux.

I have more experience with Linux, but I'm bulding another machine out of a few scrap parts I found that I was actually planning to install BSD on.

Is there even hotsync software for a Sony Clie NR70V (I think that one will have to stick with Windows)?

leadZERO: Could you please shorten your signature (or reduce the font size to 1)? It's currently too large. Thanks!

Actually a bit more complex since it has a picture viewer, digital camera, movie viewer, MP3 player, Word/Excel reader and Memory Stick importer (all use different apps).

Are we talking about hotsync software, i.e. for calendar and addresses?

Well, the HotSync software it uses is IntelliSync, but to Sync in pictures and movies, I need to use other programs (PictureGear and gMovie). What about stuff like AvantGo, etc?

How easy is it to find drivers for digital cameras, etc? Most manufaturers only do Windows/Mac dirvers.

I'm planning to build this computer--does it sound like something Red Hat would support?

                      CPU - (Intel Pentium 4 1.5 GHz)
                      Motherboard - (Asus P4B266-C)
                      RAM - (256 MB PC2100)
                      HDD - (IBM 120GB UDMA100 7200rpm)
Video Card - (RADEON 7000 GPU)
Sound Card - (Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 128)
                      DVD - (Lite-On 16X Black DVD)
                      CD-RW - (Lite-On 32X 12X 40X)
                      LAN - (Intel 8460)
Floppy - (Black Sony 3.5" Floppy)

Linux can run on the most basic machine and those specs are deffinately suitable.

I have freebsd on a 133mhz, 512mb ram with a 6gb drive and it runs fine.
