I would suggest learning from big forums which are still growing exponentially and few of them are running vbulletin..
Its not past, what we used to do 15+ years, trends always keep changing...
Your old ways were easy (followed by millions) and faded away..
But still there are lots of new ways to splur in your niche or probably find a new niche which is untouched..
Example is reddit, one of top 5 UGC site, it has its own ways..
