It took me quite a while to get from 950.000 per month to 1 million, as my server is frequently bogged down and turns away a lot of visitors. This is limiting the growth. Fortunately a server cluster will resolve this in the near future.

          congrats there!

Probably won't need more than dedicated web + db server (2 servers) to handle that load with the right web server and db tuning

              Thanks!
I will be moving the site to 1 hardware server with 2 virtual servers on it. Especially to separate search / backup from the rest as that currently eats up all resources at times.
The growth rate of the site has been quite steep. (10-15% per month traffic increase until it hit server max) If that picks up again after the site is moved to a 1 server cluster, then I will be able to simply add a server(s) to expand the virtual servers capacity.
What db tuning do you think the site needs?

I have migrated to a private cloud and litespeed. It currently consists of 2 virtual servers(MySQL + LSWS) running on 1 server. Additionally there are a backup server and a replication server. I have chosen this setup because it allows me to quickly add more servers to the cloud without changing the setup. The new setup has allowed further growth and my traffic is quickly rising.

I have reached 1.5 million unique monthly visitors now. At this rate I will see 2 million uniques in spring / summer.

I wonder how much traffic my current setup can take, before I need to start adding more servers.

On your new server, try Debian. Watch how much resources you save over the traditional Cent OS install

For the physical server, the virtual webserver or the virtual database server?

                          All the above.

                          You'll notice the difference

Properly tuned CentOS can do just as well But yes out of the box Debian would have average less memory usage at least.
