  • Do you know a way to integrate Usenet newsgroups into a site ?

    Hi,
I'm looking to add links to newsgroups from my forums.
What I would like is a usenet newsgroup provider that would let me configure the page the way I want (my look, my advertisement...). Of course, I'm ready to pay for such a service.

I'm NOT looking to host myself the news server, but have them remotely hosted by a provider.

    Thanks,
    Benj

There's a hack for Phorum to do this.

I'd say it could be reasonably modified for vbulletin if someone wanted to take the time. I'd be interested, too.

How does this hack works ?
Where can I see it in action ?

      Thanks,

Yes something like this would have some nice possibilities.... I am pretty sure I would use it as well.

          )))))))
I'm an excellent suggestion guy. Even If I'm not a programmer my self, I always provide excelent suggestions to web developpers

I tried to look over phorum hack, but the link to the hack doesn't work.
This hack would simply multiply the potential of my site by 10.

If anyone is still interested in this, I have just completed a usenet gateway hack. See it in action at http://britishexpats.com.

The way it works is this.
                • Set up one seperate forum for each usenet group you want to 'mirror'.
                • A perl script running via cron will grab any new messages thread them, make them look pretty and add them to a forum. Then it gets any outgoing messages posted via your forums destined for usenet and posts them.
                • There are a few new tables added to Vbulletin, a couple of extra columns to existing tables and some small edits to newreply.php and newthread.php.

The only additional things are some extra perl modules: Net::NNTP, Text::AutoFormat, Date:Parse and obviously the DBI module for MySQL.

I've also added a powerful anti-spam process allowing you to filter messages using any perl regular expression.

Put them all together and you get two-way usenet access with a nice VB interface.

I'll start documenting it and packaging it up this weekend. I should be able to release it early next week if anyone wants it.

                  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
                  Great job dude.

I'm very interested in your script.
Tell me. To grab the news you need a simple usenet account right ?

Oh yes I want this a LOT )
Please, in your documentation, could you explain how to get and install Net::NNTP, Text::AutoFormat, Date:Parse ?
Does the DBI module for mysql something special or anyone running Vbulletin already has it ?

fastforward, this is brilliant you are a star.

                    A few questions:

                    1) Who are you going to use as your newsgorup provider. I have been looking into this, i was going to have a seperate newsgroup access area of my site and found no decent free ones, you have to pay for then. Fine, but most have the most rediculous spamming things, charging like $30 per spam email. Lots of them so it is only for personal accounts etc, now i know that we won't give out our username and password etc but still i don't know. The problem is most of these nesgroups servers seem to be used for mass mail or accessing porn binaries.. i just don't know if there is a decent one we could use for what we want without having problems. there is not much way i want to give my credit card details to someone who might decide to charge a few $1000 if one of my members posts a few posts deemed "spam".

                    2) How often are you going to check through the newsgroups for new messages? Using a cron script? Also, when a new message is posted are you going to store and then submit all new messages every say 30 minutes or do it automatically.

                    3) Definitely want a "this message was posted from http://www.domain.com" but sure you got that already.

4)How are you going to deal with threaded newsgroups (my main distaste for them), going to simply do it by date sent.

                    5) What about moderating. If a thread is deleted from the forum, will it get re-downloaded when the database next gets updated.

Anyway, just some things i thought of. This i wicked news i really glad you have made it and are releasing it. Thanks

sharg, getting those is really really easy.

you use cpan and literally type in this

                        perl -MCPAN -e 'install Chocolate::Belgian'
it then does it all for you. Pretty amazing really.

                            no problem,

yes literally telnet in, (you need to be in root) and just type that line and it does everything for you, it fetches the file using LWP and then installs it for you. I have had to do it twice now for linksq SQL and it worked fine both times.
