  • Do you use the validation for new registrations?

Do you use the validation for new registrations on your board?

    If so, why?

    If not, why?

What do you think the disadvantages are of using it are? And the advantages of using it?

I remember hearing of bugs in the software with it. Is it reliable now?

No - Too much hassle, and I'll forget to vaildate so some users will be unable to post for weeks until I actually make sure no one is waiting for vailidation.

I've always used it because I want to make sure that people posting on the Board use a valid email address. I used to use WWWBoard (outdated now, but good for it's time) and had a lot of problems with spam and other inappropriate posts (pormo sites, profanity, etc.). This problem is almost completely gone now.

I thought the VB board automatically sends out a e-mail with a validation link?

I think he meant 'validate' not 'moderate'. Email validation requires no extra effort at all.

Only if you have this option set in the Admin CP.

Yeah, that was directed to ja5es, like you said, he confused "validate" with "moderate".

I'm asking about e-mail validation, NOT moderation!

Sorry, in that case I do use it. I got confused a few posts after your first post when someone switched it.

Oh, stupid me. No, I don't use it. When I register I hate having to open up my emails to be able to star posting.

Yes we use both validation and moderation.

Seems to me if you didn't use validation and a user entered an invalid email address and chose to receive reply notification, you'd get a lot of bounced email. Plus all the problems Steve mentioned as well.

I use it because most people don't uncheck the email notification and if they post a lot, I get clogged up with bounced emails.

I don't use it. I have a new forum with very few members and I want to make it easy for them to jump in and post something right away without waiting for me to read my email.

If I begin having problems with members as stated in some of the other posts then maybe I will have to reconsider this approach.
