    Editing templates

    Are templates written in php?

Does anyone have a program (under $40) that they would recommend for editing templates and .php?

I always thought it could be done in Windows Notepad or Wordpad but I've read that that is not a good idea.

    No, theyre written in html.

http://www.editpadpro.com/ Is what I use day to day for writing/fixing stuff. There is a free version. They also make some other useful tools.
you could also use something like notepad2 or notepad++

What are the downfalls of Windows Notepad and Wordpad for editing templates? Do these programs throw in extra code?

They shouldn't, however they're very basic editors that are not suited for code more often than not.
