Ninjaboard and Kunena are the top 2 joomla forums right now.

There is so much all of these forums / cms's offer, it's tough to go line by line in how they measure up.

I don't know if Joomla forums will ever match up to vbulletin as far as backend options.

Some of the simple things that help joomla forums is

    1. one click updating (click a button and the forum is updated to the latest version)

    2. styles and colors (as long as you know your template module colors, you can type them in and they blend right with your site)

    3. Infinite forums on one website. Each with their own style.

    4. Joomla plugins in posts. ( pics, media, ... all show up in forum posts. Including a full galleries)

If you take into account how easy Joomla is to customize, Photo galleries are light years ahead of vbulletin, same goes for media, I can see joomla forums rivaling vbulletin in the coming years.

At the same time, Vbulletin is one complete package made by the same company so there is no reason they shouldn't be able to race ahead. I just don't see it happening.

Here's my vbulletin site and then a joomla test site. I actually prefer my test site over my vbulletin site. Although I much prefer the vbulletin attachment system!

    Vbulletin

    Test

    I think that's a bit harsh.

I can understand why vB4 gets such a bad press because they so badly cocked up the early releases.

However it really isn't like that any more. vB4 is an evolution over vB3. Now that I'm getting more experienced with it, its styling system is infinitely more powerful than vB3's. No it isn't the most user friendly and the interface does need some work, but I am enjoying the flexibility to do all sorts of stuff that I simply could not do with vB3.

The product is still getting a "bad press" though, partly because the company itself seem to be unconvinced of its merits and have no pride in it. For the life of me I cannot see why they do this. I sometimes think it's these support forums, I think we scare them a bit. As a business they just aren't geared up for that kind of feedback.

I also think some members have a lot to answer for regarding their abusive attitude. Whilst I would not seek a return to 2009 when everyone (including myself!) was getting banned for criticism, I think it's now too far the other way.

And much as I love XenForo (and I do, I have a license and love the product), all the XF threads on here are a bit much. In the "old days", threads about Invision would be closed with a comment along the lines of "please take discussion of competitor products to their own site". That should be reinstated. I don't go over to XF and talk endlessly about vB for the same reason. It's disrespectful.

Obviously due to the history there is some overlap, and the lawsuit thread is fine (though also unnecessary frankly). But the other stuff goes over the top.

IMO, the joomla forum components will be a rival for vbulletin soon. Or should I say joomla and the forum components will rival vbulletin suite.

    What do you guys think?

Closest rivals in terms of what? Market share or quality?

In terms of market share, if you take a look at some statistics, it seems IPB and phpBB are the closest rivals.

It seems most people in this thread are discussing quality, which is a little more difficult to analyze due to the lack of hard statistical data, but from my experience I think IPB and vBulletin are closest in this category.

MyBB is indeed excellent these days and is now entirely unique code (and has been for years).

It runs some very successful sites and it's a good alternative to vB if you can't afford vB!

I've used it before, and it's a very nice freeware solution. Some of the earliest releases actually used stock vB code, but that was a long time ago. I'd say it's probably my favorite freeware solution, although on a feature-by-feature comparison, it's about equal to both phpBB 3 and SMF.
