  • Computer Chat What free email provider do you recommend to your members? (managing bounced email)

When your members use email providers that have limitations, expire quickly or are useless at sending bounced email notifications, this causes problems for your board. Members frequently ask me what free email provider they should use, but I am not sure.

    What would you recommend?

hotmail/live are a nuisance when it comes to processing bounced mail, as they send the SMTP diagnostic codes deep within the attachments. And security has been an issue with hotmail accounts in the past.

How about gmail's security? Can gmail accounts get hacked easily? Would you use a gmail account for your super-administrator forum account or would you let your staff use gmail?

Could you explain why you wouldn't? Are there specific security issues in gmail that you worry about or is it just that there will always be many hackers whipping up exploits for large email providers?

#1 I don't trust them from the very beginning.
Why not? I don't like their intrusive searches in the emails.
#2 Who are "usually" super-administrators? The site-forum owners.
Their email address should be [email protected],[email protected],etc.

Are you referring to Codes 50/550/554 errors for RFC 2034? They could simply be over quota.. These can also occur if your server is not sending out email before the delay..

There is no free email that is going to solve this, i would choose G-Mail for less returns, be sure to investigate the SMTP errors, as the problem could lay at your server level...

Never had problems suggesting Gmail, worst problem I can expect is pointing the user to the Spam folder.

I would use, Gmail defaults now to HTTPS I believe, and I imagine the Google servers security would be better than my own.
