Yes, would be interested in any comparison between these two products as well. On the surface they look very similar but I'm particularly interested in performance and a comparison of features.

Any more experiences with either Comet Chat or Arrow Chat?

You could register on both sites and test it out by yourself (both sites have a demo) to make a decision. I only can say, cometchat v2 works (now) nice on my site.

Thanks for that link Alfa, but there aren't more facebook like chat solutions as comet and arrowchat.

While I do not remember exactly which do and which dont offer facebook like 1 to 1 chat, there are many that do. Not all of them call it facebook chat. Some call it private IM. Some have it as an addon. For some applications its real hard to find out, so I emailed them all to ask them. its a shame that the result of all that is inaccessible.
I remember that Flashcoms, Pro Chat, 123flashchat have facebook like 1 to 1 chat. Im sure there were others as well. But as said its often hard to find.

I've tested both the demos but I'm really looking for feedback from those with big boards who are using (or who have used) one or the other.

Is there a noticable effect on performance?
Do members actually use them?
Which one is easier to integrate with a vB 4 forum?

I would be interested in feedback from big boards as well. It seems to me that cometchat has more functions than arrowchat. There are a lot of people that have reported problems with cometchat.
Functionality that is missing in cometchat is the ability to report chat messages, vbulletin usergroup permissions, show the number of members in chat on the main forum page. Arrowchat is jquery based. For both arrowchat as cometchat I find the chat room screen too narrow for big boards. As soon as more than a few messages are entered it becomes hard to keep track of and a sentence is broken up and spread over 3 lines.
Arrowchat has video functionality which is nice. Cometchat does not have this.

This is a valid concern and it wouldn't wonder me if this amount of users would kill your server.

My forum has 23,000 members, on average 98 members online at any one time and around 280 guests, I installed CometChat and to start with it was ok then more and more people started to use it and it just slowed my server down too much, was on a VPS then. I just upgraded to a dedicated server and have tried it out again and had ti turn it off after a few days, the resources it uses is just crazy, it is not programmed well at all and it is not very secure either!

My advice install a jabber server if you have a VPS or dedicated server or find a good host that can provide Jabber hosting, its quite daunting at first but you will see the advantages in the end. If you are a average php programmer you will be able to hack registration form together which links to your forums user table and make your own facebook style chat bar or just give your members a link to one of the many FREE messengers out there.

I would love an further explanation of how you did this. Did you use openfire?
