      i am partial to discuss.xxx.com, but 'forums' will likely benefit you better in the google index as it is the term most searchers are likely to use.
      'bbs' is pretty old school, but it may serve you well if your userbase is likely to use that term.

            Personally I avoid subdomains, they tend to cause cookie issues.

                              You could do that with mod_proxy and do that without having to setup a subdomain.
