For what's it's worth, I have a nice little Toshiba 16x. It's plenty fast and quiet (big plus, IMO).

I got the sony for 16x either 36 or 40. You might want to check out www.intrex.com My local computer store...I get all my stuff there unless I find 15 dollar 128 ram at Circuit City

I've had one for almost 2 years now - it's been absolutely excellent. It's the Pioneer slot-loading 10x40x drive.

Mr X: Yep you normally get something like 16x or less for DVD, and something more decent like 40x for CD.

In actual fact the DVD speed doesn't make any difference - as DVD movies always play at 1x. It's just when you're using data DVD's that the speed actually makes a difference.

i had a creative labsl 12x DVD for a while... it sucked (loud, intermitant at times, and it kept spinning up and down during DVD playback... and the movie being played would stop and start with the drive as it did this). i recently got a HiVAL DVD drive. played one movie... seems to work fine. weird machine noises though. haven't tried cds yet... i've just been using my yamaha burner for everything.

Would if I could but I cant so I wont. Dont have a BB or Cusa anywhere near my town (of course...god I hate where I live..)

Another question: How are transfer rates. Isnt there 2 different speeds, like one for DVD and one for regular CD-Rom stuff? Or if its like 16x, then thats what you get for both.

    Anyone own DVD Drives here?

Well my crapass 50x Afreey CDRom just died tonight. 2 years. Man I seriously am starting to hate teh computars.

Christ as if I didnt have enough on my mind to be stressed over, now this.

Since I've always wanted DVD for my system, I figure now is the time to start looking for one, but I know SQUAT about DVD.

What I need is the obvious:

    Reliable
    Fast
Works under W2K and WinMe flawlessly

Also I hear there is something about Regions. I still dont understand what the hell regions are, so if someone can be kind to explain to an idiot like me what it is I;d appreciate it.

DVD drives seem pretty affordable, so if I can get one under $100 that'd be great. So what brands should I be looking for?
