I must agree with Zach though on how far the style has come in just the last few days. I looked earlier in the week, and it sucked... now, it is looking so much more pleasing on my eyes. Slowly but surely it is coming together quite well. The subtle colour changes, rounding corners here and there, a little space between things and it is really starting to look much sharper than when released.

I'm most concerned in the long term. These forums are a major selling point when people consider buy vB. If a large amount of the user base finds them difficult to use then that may affect their decision regarding what to buy, which of course affects sales figures.
(hey if Ray can out spin on things, I can try too. LOL....)

p/s the first thing I'll be doing is re-skinning as well. To me the theme is dull and has no pizazz to it."You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me."

I'm waiting to see the innerds before I start in. Because that's gonna tell me if my money was well spent or not.

I like that UI changes have been fairly steady since the outburst of member feedback, however IMO its still wallpapering over Grand Canyon sized cracks.
The UI is still mega cluttered (worse than last week). So much could (and should) be done to streamline and simplify. I'm no UI guy so please take my suggestions with a pinch of salt:
- Hide reply/reply with quote/etc... as well as the post number, rep and report icons unless you hover over a post? Kind of how facebook shows their 'remove' link? Just use a div to 'float' over the text. This can remove repeated and redundant options as well as some white space.
- Take all the thread tools and similar drop down menus and stick them into 1 menu.
- Take most of the redundant userinfo on each post and stick it in their popup menu (i.e. IM icons, etc...). Personally I would prefer MOST userinfo to go in there, but I can easily see an argument for keeping a lot of it where it is now. But seriously... Skype and IM icons? On every single one of their posts? Naaaaa.
Here is an idea:
Have a contest to design a skin. Top prize: $1.5k, second place: $1k, third place $500. That is maybe less than a salaried employee costs for 1 month to rework your style and guess what? You get 3 different styles that you can ship vb4 with! And the winning designers get ubur exposure and kudos. In fact, the contest would be a great idea in order to get some serious buzz going and could really inspire some of the customers that aren't feeling the love from this rather bland version.
People shouldn't HAVE to have reskinning as their number 1 priority to roll out vB4. Lets face it, there will be enough to do for most site owners to upgrade without have to reinvent the wheel at the same time.
