There's a captch mod @ vb.org which shows a bunch of images and then says "click on the ___"

I think it's simple, fast and good.

People need to reread Steve Krugg's "Don't Make Me Think". It fully applies in this scenario as well. Any website that makes me think or use a calculator to register, isn't worth my time. They have a million and 1 competitors so I will just go elsewhere.

And what about those people who are visually impaired?
To be fair, that could be said about the current capture system now, letters on a pattern background.

Very clever, but just to complicated for your average user trying to register.

I just created something to rival the CAPTCHA system the OP posted. I'm just saying that it doesn't need to be that complicated.

After looking at their system I thought of a much simpler but similar one.

I was thinking of having 3-5 images display on screen and on the top right of the image generate a random letter.
Ask the user what letter is on what image. For example...
    • What letter is on the image of the cat?
    • What letter is on the image of the cheese?

    Wow, neat stuff!

As it seems to have what it takes to make sure a "human only" has a chance to make it thru. I think it was a bit loooong. If I was trying to register, I think I would have lost interest.

I think it's ok. to much scrolling to read the letters IMO. then again it's better than some of the captures were I have been unable to read it my due to colouring etc. (The same type of capture default prior to 3.7 I sometimes could not read it)

It still looks for letters as an input, so I can't see this being any better than what is used now, and technically it will probably be easier to defeat as it doesn't use numbers in the mix.

I quite like it, although it might be potentially server intensive (I expected someone to say that) and you'd still need custom images and the like. I still think there are ways to stop even human spammers before registration though.
