I use Recaptcha and a Vetting system on my forum. Basically if someone who is a member of the forum doesn't recommend or vouch for you then you don't get access. Non-approved members can only post in three forums. And I have 0 spam.. 0 spam registrations. Well we did have one porn bot register but since I get an email for every new registration, they didn't last long enough to validate their email address.

So... I use Recaptcha, Email Validation, New User Moderation as well as Akismet scanning. Each forum will be different. There is a list in this forum somewhere of disposable email domains that I have banned but I don't have any IP bans and allow Hotmail, Gmail, AOLMail and Yahoo Mail to register.

If you are relying only on CAPTCHA whether its image verification or question and answer based, then you are going to lose the battle. You need to be more proactive in monitoring registration these days.
What would you suggest? Enable recaptcha or still using Q&A?

Same here, nearly all my recent spammers (selling shoes) resolve to a China ip.

The Q&A only works if yours is unique. I only use one and it keeps them out perfectly. On average I get about 35 attempts a day and none get through.

They were put as examples of question formats not to be used directly.

Using the last three letters in the word Elephant, what kind of insect do you get?

Individual sites could have specific questions to their content as well.

reCAPTCHA's been broken, there's a long thread about it in the other support forum here. Over the last couple of weeks thousands of forums with reCAPTCHA started seeing spam from the same Chinese spammers. We got it on our forums too, just as described in that thread. So much for reCAPTCHA... If vB at least enabled you to use multiple protection at once (Q&A and reCAPTCHA) it might slow them down a bit, but right now the only chance is a single option, each of which has already been cracked by spammers. It's a bloody nightmare...

(I'm talking about Q&A, let's see with recaptcha).
The same is with recaptcha now! Still have spam signups with enabled recaptcha!

After registrations they try to edit (and post a link to a Chinese spam website in) their signature and afterwards they try to start a new thread.
