Quite possibly a manual registration rather than automated/scripted. Keep an eye on it for a while and see if you get more.

Don't use the examples Wayne used, those will not work.

The Q&A only works if yours is unique. I only use one and it keeps them out perfectly. On average I get about 35 attempts a day and none get through.

They were put as examples of question formats not to be used directly.

Same here, nearly all my recent spammers (selling shoes) resolve to a China ip.

Don't work. Have new spam registrations. with and individual Q&A function enabled - totally useless. very bad.

You do know that a spammer can pay someone in a third world nation $2.00 a day and have them register on hundreds of forums. That information is then fed into bots that spam the forums with those registrations.

If you are relying only on CAPTCHA whether its image verification or question and answer based, then you are going to lose the battle. You need to be more proactive in monitoring registration these days.

What would you suggest? Enable recaptcha or still using Q&A?

I use Recaptcha and a Vetting system on my forum. Basically if someone who is a member of the forum doesn't recommend or vouch for you then you don't get access. Non-approved members can only post in three forums. And I have 0 spam.. 0 spam registrations. Well we did have one porn bot register but since I get an email for every new registration, they didn't last long enough to validate their email address.

So... I use Recaptcha, Email Validation, New User Moderation as well as Akismet scanning. Each forum will be different. There is a list in this forum somewhere of disposable email domains that I have banned but I don't have any IP bans and allow Hotmail, Gmail, AOLMail and Yahoo Mail to register.
