Brute force or similar, I remember site where you can find accounts for different bulletin board around the internet.
Of course they may enter a couple of times than stop.

As soon as you see a login for your site on BugMeNot, verify that the password is correct then ban it.

Every time I use bugmenot I also check for vb logins, and ban those accounts. But I have not done so for ages since we got the site blocked : http://www.bugmenot.com/view/vbulletin.com

Use Arp Poison to trick a local network packet in your hands, and just packet sniff the MAC address...

You can Ban any of the following

• Any MAC address used by the offender LAN Card "Ethernet"..
• The Router MAC address used by the offender - Even Cable/DSL modem as it is a router.
• The first hop router used by offender..

Personally i find banning the first hop router is most effective, as they can use a proxy all they want. Their still banned...

WOW, thankyou all so very much for this. I sent him an email (to all the email addresses that he is using) that my Solicitor created to which he replied with an apology. All has been quiet from him now although I am not sure whether he is still a user by some other means but as long as he isn't polluting the forums then all is fine. My forums are for recreational aviation and here in Australia to be a pilot and fly into many airstrips you need an Aviation Security card. If legal action was taken against him for harassment then it would go against him when renewing his card.

It seems that all the technology in the world may not stop a person but make it a personal loss to them and it has worked in this case

As per my first post; persistence
As site owner just keep banning the IP and don't give attention to it in public, and just keep banning.

maybe close registration, and use registration by invites only...just for a couple of days or week.

I have the first 15 posts on my forums moderated. So once I ban someone, it takes a while for the person to get back on. There's no real way to ban someone, so I rarely do it.
