if this thread would be better suited in a different forum, please feel free to move it.

since i have to ask, i probably already know the answer, but nobody ever acused me of being the brightest bulb in the knife drawer so here goes ...

i own a permanent licence for my vb software and have had it installed and running for almost two years now. love it. great job, please keep up the good work ... my question is ...

do you guys allow for setting set up a test forum on a seperate site?

if i could do that, the betterhalf and i can play around with it and test stuff before installing it on our regular forums. it would also come in handy for upgrading the sofware and installing things before making it available to the rest of the members.

Yes, but It should be in a password protected directory, with registration disabled... Also would be good to use a directory name along the lines of /testvb..

The vBulletin License specifically allows for a test and development installation to be created. You can read the license at:

      The specific clause is:
If you have a valid licence, you may set up an additional test forum in order to test code, template and database modifications. To make this clear to us and our licence verification procedures, place it in a directory called 'testvb' and be sure to password protect it. It must not be accessible by the general public.

i was expecting that it would be a violation of the licence agreement.

i must appoligize ... after i posted this and started looking around, i noticed some 100 threads (possibly exagerated) devoted to this very subject. at least my title is more straight forward than most, so maybee itll help keep the same thing from being posted as often in the future.

im learning it all as i go, like i suspect alot have. the original board was professionally installed and ive come along way since then.

so far, in regards to the test forum, i created a test file on the other server and used cpanel to password protect it. i did search for those instructions before i asked. lol. i edited the config file and im uploading all the files (except the ones that say "DO NOT UPLOAD") as we speak. my connection at this location is a bit slow so itll be a while yet before i know if i did the edits right.

Is it a requirement to name the folder "testvb"? Because I have it on local host which uh is in a folder no one will ever find

Yes. It will make it easier for the piracy team to tell it's not a live instance, but a private and temporary test setup.
