I am on Ubuntu for about 4 months now. I worked in parralel with Ubuntu & Windows XP for about a year, because I wanted to be sure that I can do all my current tasks in Ubuntu. Since Ubuntu passed the test, it is my main OS now.
Using virtualization (VMWare) I still have access to Windows XP. I need to do this because 2 years ago I bought a laser printer that has no drivers for Linux. (at the time I was not really interested in Linux, so I did not checked the compatibility with Linux)
However, my laptop is still on Windows XP. I just don't feel like investing the time in updating the OS on the laptop, because I don't use it that much.

Most OEM's Acer included, even Dell software will slow it down.
I use to custom build all my systems, but found that it wasnt really worth the money in savings anymore. And i loved the new Dell XPS systems.
I always wipe out the systems I buy and reinstall Vista.. Never have had any problems, even with third party software, or drivers..MCSE, MVP, CCIE

With that said, I use fedora 8 on my desktop and windows xp pro on my laptop. Thinking of giving Ubuntu a try but from what I see, it doesn't look that great..
