Couldn't you have made an announcement in clients acp's to warn them to check their registered mail account for important update??

Not necessarily true Wayne. An eBulletin plus a small apology might settle some of the natives

My first impression was the email was phishing. Such an odd request; but thanks for verifying it's real.

Funny thing though, when I came on here just now it automatically logged me on without a hitch ("remember me"). I didn't enter the new password.

You definietly haven't been here longer than I. In fact I pre-date all of the devs except maybe for Freddie. I can positively say this has never happened before.

If they were going to implement a security procedure I would think you post an announcement that policy will change and that further information will follow. No company, although Jelsoft has shown they do things in an unorganzied manor, would ever just change users access to members area without forwarning the customers.

I firmly beleive this was a panic measure because customer info was compromised.

Actually new passwords were issued around the same time as vBulletin 3.0 was. Not sure if it was every customer but it was quite a bit of them. It was at that time we switched the format of the customer ID and license IDs as well.

I must have missed that one. I have the original email that I received in 2000 and up until today still used the same login details.
It was lucky for me I just changed the contact email when I transfered one of my licenses a few months ago or I would be jumping through hoops to get that problem fixed.

Jelsoft have already stated that this was not the case.

I for one beleive them. The vB staff are good guys, I really can't imagine them lying about something like that.

No, they haven't. I hope that is clear enough now.

I must have missed them saying the customer database wasn't compromised. Don't think for a minute they won't lie to you. I don't care what company it is they will lie and tell stories until the truth comes out and it normally does.
When Earthliniks user db was compromised they reacted the same way. Changed everyones login info and said it was a routine change after reviewing scurity practice. Same with AOL when they were compromised. Only later did the truth come out. The only good thing about this is Jelsoft doesn't hold CC info. If they did I would shutting my credit card account down like I did with Earthlink.

This wasn't an issue for me with only one license, it's going to be a pain sorting out my clients 20 forums when we need to upgrade

I have several accounts; the "problem" with the email is it doesn't tell you the customer number the account is associated with (although that in itself is a security issue, too, if you want to get technical).

So, guess I'll be playing "guess which account this password belongs to" until I get them all sorted out.

Each account can only be associated with a single email address and email address must be unique across all licenses. If you have the original purchase email for that email address then it would have the customer number in it.

Most customers however have their licensess combined into a single customer account for easy management.

"Most" customers probably don't manage as many sites as "some" of us.

A minor annoyance at most; I suspect you'll be spending much more time dealing with the fallout from this than I will be.
