Any reason to limit the time a user can edit posts?

A user asked me today why exactly anyone would limit the time a user can go back and edit their post(s).

His example is that he posts scores and often goes back to update race standings, various lists etc.

One thought I had was that I don't care to let people go back and basically delete their posts by editing them and erasing the content. Modifying posts in threads can get confusing for users who might read them later. (especially if they edit what they said but they have bee quoted already)

In general I haven't given it much thought though. Anyone have a strong feeling one way or another?

    several...

    - a user thar goes mad because he gets an infraction, and then starts editing his own posts, deleting usefull content to other

    - same behaviour as before but starts deleting threads

    - user flame other uses and then edit posts so they won't get infractions

    among some others

If you deal with a big forum with lots of users you'll see this can be useful, although in the example you gave it would be great to be able to extemp some users with this limitation
