Something they thought they were cute in changing. There was no special edition release, especially not of a bugfix release.

I want a special edition version

You should change the copyright to be gold, call it a special edition and charge twice as much for it

You can change the version number to anything you want. If I wanted to, I could be running vBulletin 6.6.6 or 9.3.2, for example.

If you buy a license it is a special edition. The legal one.

Some people do it because they believe it promotes security through obscurity.

It's not so much preventing obscurity as not broadcasting vulnerability.

true.. but you can still find the version # another way

No point in hiding it in the footer..

Yes I know it's also in the meta data, but only the footer's plain text is indexed in search engines. Anyway, this is rather off-topic.

It is probably in the .php files, the .js and .xml files too. The php ones are obviously not readable, but the js ones are for example. Search engines can and do read the meta data, and the version number is in there too for the generator tag.

Charge twice as much just for the footer to be changed to Special Edition?
