  • Need expert advice on how to increase membership

    Hi,
    I lauched a website (www.meracarforum.com) 3 days ago.
I am getting a lot of visits - I see "guests" on the board every now and
then. But very few of them are becoming members.

Number of members = 30 in 3 days.

In your experience, in the intial phase is 10 new members per day a good
    number.

The other thing is that may be only 40% of them are contributing.
The ones that are contributing are pretty active. But a vast majority of
    them have 0 posts.

I was wondering if you had any tips for
    a) Getting more of the Guests to join in as members.
    b) How to encourage members to contribute more.

    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    Madhu

The best thing you can do is run contests to increase your base. 30 members in 3 days isnt bad though. How are you exposing your site?

      Hi,
      Thanks for the reply.

      >> Contests like? you mean pay $ for membership?

30 members in 3 days isnt bad though. How are you exposing your site?
      >> I am relying on members refering their friends.
      >> I also emailed couple of yahoo groups on similar topics.
      >> Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

What I did in the past and will be doing soon enough with my current board is running contests for higher membership levels. That worked out well with my last board. I used the referral system and posted that the member who referred the most new members would receive moderator status, the second most would receive a custom title with 1000 pm storage and so on.

I closed my last board due to legal issues but I had a huge member base right off the bat from doing that.

The next thing I did that helped was adding a link directory that forced a recip link. I had a mass of new members with link partnerships on similar boards and sites.

I found that partnerships with other sites was actually the best way to snag new members. The traffic was targeted and they were already interested in the forum and its content since they were coming from similar places. If you do that, try to find sites that do not have a forum on them. You'll get their visitors quickly!

More content, then more content, then even more content. then last of all more content.

I just looked at your forum, you've created a rod for your own back I'm sorry to say, because you've created loads of forum boards. And each one has about 1 or 2 posts only on them all.

Only loads of content will bring visits and future members to your site to join. And with all them forums you've setup. Your going to have a very hard time posting enough content to make the forums look full. Honesty do the maths, to get 100 threads on each forum. You would have to post about 3,200 threads. Becuase you have that many forums to cover.

Remember ROME wasn't built in a day, start smaller so you can manage the content...

I think you are doing fantastic even getting a few people to sign up. I play WC3 all the time and spam my forums on there quite a bit and still no signups. I think my forums have bad mojo.

Part of the problem is your site is called Starcraft 2, which is an older version of the game, that most people will move away from the play the latest version.

So your sites domain name is not that good anymore. As it indicates its a site for the older Starcraft 2.

No not really, tried the game a few years ago. Didn't like it though.

The version you played is really old but still very popular. Starcraft 2, when it is finished development, will blow all of the other RTS games out of the water.

I'd say this is an extremely good start for a new 3 days old forum.
