  • Cannot import video into Movie Maker? *Error*

Seem to be having a problem, just made a video - transfer the video of the camcorders HDD onto the PC.

I try to import the video and I get the following error.. (See screenshot).

I want to try and import the video so that the amount of 'MB' of the video will go down so I can upload it to YouTube.

Any ideas what the error means? also is there any other free programme out there what will let me do this?

If what you're wanting is to compress it, and just basic editing try Adobe premier trial (http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/). it's daunting at first, but the basic tools are there, half the stuff you probably won't need.

Edit: and not idea about the error, sorry.

            250MB.

Just tried again now with a 5 second video, didn't get the same error in the screenshot, I just got the

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Desktop\movie.wmv could not be imported.
I've changed the file types around to see if that was the issue but it isn't.

Sounds like it might be a codec issue, is it Windows Movie Maker version 2/2.1 ?

You dont get a Codec error, or a DRM error do you??

When trying to play the video yes, I get 'error, downloading codec'.

Go on tools, options, compatibility then click on the end tab and check on all the boxes.
                  Click Apply and ok...

                            Download this file:
                            http://www.divx-digest.com/software/gspot.html

It will tell you what CODEC is needed. WMV really isn't helpful as files with this extension can be encoded with different codecs such as divx, xvid, avi and even others. Once you know the codec, download and install it.

FFDShow usually gives you what you need for the most commonly used codecs. You can check the DIVX and XVID sites for more up-to-date codecs for those formats. You will also find some codec packages here:

                              Thank you Wayne.

All seems to be in working order, playing OK and all that. The only thing what is a problem now, when I import the video into Windows Movie Maker, try and save it, Windows Movie maker crashes.

                              Any ideas?
