How much RAM do you have in your system?

      Is it Vista home/ultimate etc??

You may want to try out Diskmon, it will capture disk activity and narrow down the exact problem for you.
It could be an application doing it...

Download Diskmon 2.02 - A simple and straightforward utility that captures all hard disk activity or acts like a software disk activity light in your system tray

They say Windows XP, but i believe they will install on Vista...

No problem, there is a good chance it could be the Vista indexing service.
But that would only cause disk writing for approximately 1 hour...

Then again, there are alot of third party applications that could also cause constant disk writing..

Disabling system protection/restore points may also help, then just use a backup solution such as Acronis to image your drive once a week.
          That's what i use..

The Kernel in Windows Server 2003/Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 share many key features, which is why it is recommended to have at least 1-GB of RAM in a Windows Vista system, 2-GB is ideal..
Windows Vista SP1 is due to be released later this year, possibly in November at least in beta, and addresses some of the issues with the indexing services.

More Info on Windows Vista SP1 can be found here..

I thought it might be my anti-V... good idea on the restore points... and didn't think about imaging my drive...

That's caused by Vista randomly indexing your drive.

“Four Oh Four” To My Dedicated Reader, The page you were looking for is currently not found on this website. This could be an error…

This guy has a great site for configuring vista to your needs.

Windows Search is the service that's no doubt causing your hard drive thrashing issues. Unless you use the search tool almost all the time to find programs on your system, you probably wouldn't need that service running.
