Only two reasons to prune in my opinion.

          1) Time invalidates the posts and makes them untrue.

          2) You are reaching the 4 GB file size limit on your post table.

I just move them to a private forum for reference sake. In case the government needs info about banned members, I can show them that.

with our previous boardware, I used to prune the 'chit-chat' like forums regularly, to save disk space (the program used static HTML pages, so it ate quite a lot of space)

nowadays, I do not prune anything anymore. users can set a thread view cutoff date if they do not want to see the 'old crap'

well, yes.. thats almost the same.

with delete, you have to select exactly which threads you want to delete.

with prune, you can do a search on a number of criteria, and delete the results of this search, all in one go.

I never prune. I think its a bad idea to prune because people like reading content, even if its old, it can still be accurate and useful to the member .

I never prune, gives more stuff to Google to index.

I'm using however a nice mod that yells in red for readers "this topic is more than XX months/years old".

I'd really like to see an option short of deleting posts to shrink the db. Append to txt/html would be nice.

Yes, we delete the tons of posts in our political forum because they use megabytes per week and the db just doesn't need it.

That's pretty easy to get around.
