  • Straight upgrade or test first?

Seeing the number of people who, within minutes of the announcement being made, upgraded their forums right away made me wonder!

How many out there just go straight for it without a thought for testing it first - and how many make sure they nail it down on a backup copy?

Did it that way and didn't happen for me so always test it first. Prefer to do it nice and quick and right after the testing than having to fart about trying to work out where it went wrong with a live upgrade.

i think most of these errors are due to mandatory template changes. As long you have them reverted or new codes manually added, you may not run into these errors.

I always do my localhost first before I touch any of my live boards.

Backup and then do the upgrade. If something screws up, it only takes a couple of minutes to restore the backup anyway.

But when I was still new to vB, I tested everything on my testboard before, upgrades and hacks.
But now I do all upgrades directly, I even install some hacks without testing them before if the users who also tried them and don't post any complaints at vb.org (but I make backups).

I wait a couple of days, because sometimes Jelsoft finds an important bug in a new release that needs patching.

But now I'm upgrading my test board, mainly to test some mods and give me some peace of mind.

Backup first; upgrade second; think later.

The minor release doesn't seem too drastic, I have a small board so I'd probably just do a direct upgrade to 3.6.6.

I personally go for a straight upgrade unless there are some alterations to post tables, due to low resources on server alteration to post takes couple of hours..

A backup helps in this case..

I usually backup and upgrade right away if it's a minor upgrade (like within 3.6.x).

Having some important modifications installed I test any major upgrades first though (like 3.5.x to 3.6.x).
