  • Monitor Issue

Whenever I turn my monitor off, it automatically turns back on. I've also tried setting it to turn off via the Control Panel (instead of using the power button) and it automatically turns itself back on then, as well.

Anything I can do to fix this, or am I stuck pissing away money on a new monitor?

    Put it in your microwave.

Just kidding! Check all the pins on the connector of the monitor cable, and make sure your driver is updated. Hope that helps.

    Edit:

    Advice from the hubby:

    1. Disconnect the power from everything.
    2. Disconnect the video cable from computer and monitor.
    3. Examine those pins on cable and display card.
    4. Plug the monitor back in, and turn it on.
    5. Turn it off. Did it stay off?

    If yes, good, else bad.

This would rule out mechanical problems, and point towards software/computer.

    1. With power off, remove case from computer.
    2. Check for loose wires, make sure video card is properly seated.
    3. Check for excessive dust (I vacummed mine out today- ugh)

I'll post if he has anymore ideas.

Do you have an optical mouse? If so, try turning the mouse upside-down so that the sensor is pointing up at the ceiling.

I've had some mice in the past that did not have a sleep mode, and even the slight vibration of someone walking in the room is enough to convince the mouse that it's being moved and hence send a wake up signal to the monitor.

I tried the optical mouse idea Kier - no dice.

I also dusted out my computer and made sure everything was still hooked up correctly (since the monitor went crazy randomly), then booted everything back up.

Since then, my monitor has turned off and on (by itself) probably 8 to a dozen times now. But, when I turn it off, it stays off, and it's stopped turning off randomly.

I'll monitor it's behavior tomorrow and post back.

That's what kept my powerbook to keep booting even with the lid down. It took a few days to realize it was the microsoft laser mouse.

Could it not be a faulty switch on the monitor? Sticking perhaps?

Nah, even when it goes to hibernate mode due to inactivity it'll turn itself back on.

Also, it *may* be connected to the mouse, as when I get up and walk away the monitor will turn off then back on by itself. However, yesterday morning I would push the button I don't know how many times, and it simply refused to turn on.
