Technically, going without sleep is possible; if we take into account of the definition of "sleep". Power nappers avoid REM and they function normally. I think the only necessaties we need in life are blood, oxygen, food and water.
What time do you wake up/ go to bed?

Monday I woke up early in the day, that night I was up late until 4, when I read online that my new mac was gonna get delivered around 9. So I waited until 9:30 to find out they tried to deliver it at wrong address. So i had to wait until 4 for them to deliver it as second attempt. Then I tried it out and after dinner I went to bed. I couldn't sleep .. so I watched a movie until I nearly passed out. Four hours later I was awake again. And it was 4 o clock again. 24hrs awake + wait time + hour sleep, and then four hours sleep .. all in 48 hours. I wasn't feeling too happy about that.Comment

bed time? depends what time my noisy neighbor turns his music off!
getting up? depends on if I have class or not.
like tonight, it's almost 1am and I might have well have gone clubbing in town. I have class at 8am tomorrow (or would that be today?) so I am not best impressed.
Of course then there are other nights when I actually get to bed and asleep and then someone rings me at 3:15am!!!
My prefered pattern is one of 48-72 hours awake followed by 12-18 hours sleep. I can easliy go a lot longer than that, but I get the shakes and it's pretty impossible to code when your hands are bouncing all over the keyboard!
So far this week I've had about 10 hours sleep, and it's thursday morning now.
On average though, I tend to be awake PST hours but I live in GMT land. It probably explains why I spend so much time chatting to FlorisComment

I assume what you are talking about is people who sleep for 20 minutes and then stay awake for 2 - 3 hours and then have a 20 minute nap again and so on. It has been shown that people who sleep like this actually enter REM state much faster (almost instantly) unlike the normal of 2 - 3 hours. Thus they are not actually going without sleep.Comment

We're all familiar with being sleep deprived, but did you know there are actual stages of sleep deprivation? We review the dangers of sleeplessness.
Interesting read. I stand by what I said about the fact that sleep is a necessity. I do not believe it is possible to go without sleep without doing damage to your body and / or cognitive functions.Comment

Is that why i look about 19 when I'm younger?also yes I get angry quick, but I don't suffer from loss of memory, and the sadness no, I'm always happy
Now solving problems, no problem at all, so yeah I'm normal just not as much sleep as I should get.
"Fortunately, most of these disorders can be treated successfully. Symptoms of a possible sleeping disorder may include:
excessive snoring."
Out of all that list when I'm asleep thats all I get.
Is it because I'm just a total weirdo, as school students when I used to go to school called me.

Of course your not a weirdo. I was mearly making the point that it is unhealthy to go for prolonged periods of time without sleep. I believe that most people who suffer from depression do so simply because they either do not get enough exercise or because they do not get enough sleep (or both).
Both are essential to living a healthy lifestyle (and that means physical as well mental well being), I also believe that people are too quick now a days to look for a cure in the form of a prescription. People have been functioning for thousands of years and the its only now when lack of exercise is a really big problem that these things are starting to manifest themselves in a big way. If society in general does not do something then we are going to be in big trouble in a few decades time.Comment

Sorry that part was not directed at you, it was mearly an observation on the problems that many people seem to be suffering from today and my own personal beliefs on a way that should help them.Comment

I used to be a power nap pro getting in alot of studying, work and fun throughout the day. I usually end up studying through the night with about 20 min naps every 2-3 hours of studying. I would do this and then go on with the day from about 8am to night again when I would do the same.
I didn't feel any different when I did that - I went to the gym and am an avid trainer. I just didn't see fast gains and my body didn't repair itself as fast.
Nowadays I HAVE to be in bed by 11pm-12am. I then try to be up for 6:15am every day on the dot. If it is days that I work out intensely then I take maybe 30-1 hour of nap when I have free time between classes or right after classes before I get back on with what I need to do.Last edited by someuser190826; Fri 24 Nov '06, 11:17am.Comment
