    www.talkbritain.co.uk

Was named GB Pride (Great British Pride) but decided to change it as people think it's a racist website apparently. It's a very relaxed discussion forum for people to have free speech on the state of Britain and to debate with others.

Typical new forums mistake: Having too many forums/sub-forums. They help nothing but keeping guest off from registering as it indicates lesser activity than what can be noticed with fewer forums.
You're spending millions of dollars on a website?!

The forum is set up as a broad information exchange, we have no interest in having a ton of members contributing unless they have something of value to post.

Most forums today are simple signature spamming mediums, we are not interested in building that type of "popular forum", in addition we are not looking at a narrow focus but are trying to provide a big picture for our members.

You can have a wide range of subjects in a limited number of forums / sub forums. I don't see the need for 50+ (or however many there are). I'm mearly pointing out that as a visitor to your site I was turned off even looking at it just by the sheer number of options available.

Give people too many options and they don't know what to do . Remember KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) works for things like that too.

Well, I'm turned off by a lot of forums with ugly custom skins, side bars that reduce the size of the index page, too many adds on the index page and a lot of other stuff too!

The forum index page is large by design, as I mentioned, to provide a broad source of information for forum users and forum owners!

It's our core business (see my sigs) but we're not being very successful at this point. We're rethinking our strategy entirely but I find that the hardest thing with issue-based forums is propagation.
                            **edit** duh, no sigs.
                            So basically:

It takes a very long term commitment to build a forum, there are millions of them online today, so you must have something unique to offer, that may be knowledgeable posters, entertaining posters or very controversial subject matter, but even with all that it is still a very long road and you must stay committed if you wish to find success in the end.
