Ok so need to pick a few of the techheads brains. Ive been doing formatting for firends and family for a few years now.
However today I encountered something new. A Low / Dead CMOS Battery.
Whilst I do know the CMOS is vital. Im just wanting for someone to confirm my suspicions to a few further probs it seems to have caused.
The machine I was formatting is an old Duron 750mhz. Basically the install of windows seemed to go fine then stuck at 56%. I then had to reboot, this lead to the CMOS reporting a bad checksum. Which inturn meant the BIOS half loading and freezing.
So out comes the CMOS, quick jumper change and reboots up with "CMOS Battery Low" (as we know).
As expected at this point booting even the Bios became impossible. So gave the CMOS battery a wee heat (in my hands) and, it boots up I get windows installing and it freezes at 2%, and once more CMOS bad checksum and it wont boot the bios.
So my thoughts are (probs obvious) that these issues are due to a now flat powerless CMOS battery.
Before this im told by my relatives the PC was prone to random crashing and ran v.slow.
Ive got a new Battery and am heading back over tomoz to fix it, and like I say basically need a 2nd opinion to confirm my own thoughts, if indead there not dumb founded.
