    I can imagine a bash script that might look like this:

    Upgrade step 1. Adding new structure ..
    echo "start step 1\n" >> output.tab
    mysql db_name < upgrade_step1.sql >> output.tab
    echo "stop step 1\n" >> output.tab
    continue?

    Upgrade step 2. Updating existing structure to match 3.6 ..
    mysql db_name < upgrade_step2.sql >> output.tab

    Upgrade step 3. Inserting new data ..
    mysql db_name < upgrade_step3.sql >> output.tab

    Upgrade step 4. Running ALTER queries ..
    mysql db_name < upgrade_alter_attach.sql >> output.tab
    mysql db_name < upgrade_alter_post.sql >> output.tab
    mysql db_name < upgrade_alter_postindex.sql >> output.tab

    etc (obviously this won't work just like that .. but its the idea i guess)
