    Both. What Dean is trying to say is that, on a forum with perhaps hundreds of users online at a time, actually displaying the full "Who's Online" list will take up a big portion of the page while providing relatively little use for the user.

    Once you have more than one or two dozen people online at a time, the Who's Online list becomes pretty much useless to the majority of your users. Sure, it may be interesting from time to time to check who's online, but to have a huge list display every single time on every single pageload of your forumhome? A waste of both screen space *and* server resources.
