if they were to use a US based proxy it would be loads easier to use some US based free email service, too. besides, proxies can easily be figured out from the headers and by looking in the open proxy monitor databases.

so when I say that most of the spammers that attempt to register at my board with @*.ru emails are actually from america, I meant it.

I'm getting 2, maybe 3 of these registrations per day and I just delete them as I see them.
Problem is that is a pain in the read end. In fact, it's exactly what the spammers want to do -- make us do something we don't want to do. In fact, that is exactly what I am doing. You wonder how many legitimate registrations are getting lost because of the moderation and the fact that some never get the confirming email so they can activate their accounts. *sigh*

If they're spamming message boards, there is a high chance they're sending out email spam as well. No free US based email is going to allow them to send out bulk junk mail. Check your spam box for any gmail.com, hotmail.com, or yahoo.coms. If they were however all from the US, why would they be using .ru domains only. There are hundreds of domain extensions, why .ru? Even with your elite IP tracking skills, I highly doubt you'd be able to locate one.

that's some nonsensical crap. we were talking about board spammers, not generic viagra and ***** enlargement bull****, which, FYI, is 98% .com/.net/.org.

but coming back to .ru board spammers, it seems to me that the easiest explanation is an internal conflict. it's very possible that some user from Russia was banned on the board in subject and couldn't get over it. or someone posted a racist article that attracted attention of Russian users.

this has actually happened to my board before. someone started a france hate thread which lead to both ddos from french IPs and a LOT of french folk registering and creating rage threads.

in any case, before I upgraded to vB 3.6 the territorial spread of spam bots was something like this:

          USA: 75%
          Poland: 10%
          france: 10%
          Other: 5%

Well, the influx of .ru spam on my boards has nothing to do with internal conflict - we've never had a single Russian user and CERTAINLY no racist material, which is a complete no-no on our boards.

I would not worry about what that guy says. He seems to be grasping at straws, IMHO.

interesting how ALL americans tend to be somewhat against russians for one reason or another and always tend to blame them for their problems. I guess the government still does a pretty good job of brainwashing people over there. in any case, consider yourself yet another yank I've added to my ignore list.

Good for you, Ignore me if you wish. Your statement shows you have a problem with Americans as a whole.

On the other hand (though you are ignoring me), I met and had friends with MANY Soviets. Both in and out of uniform. They were great friends and we had a lot of fun. I miss the times we had. So as for your bias, sorry... you are completely wrong yet again.

But I had this in place prior to the spam registrations. I generally go in and manually activate the yahoo and hotmail registrations that sit with the users awaiting email confirmation tag after checking their info b/c most of them get rerouted to the junk mail folders.

Anyway, it's not a big issue for me as we don't have tons of new registrations each day so I can take the time to manage this and it helps reduce the spam.

Me? FWIW, I'm British. So try reformulating your argument, and not jumping to conclusions. And chill out, and take that chip off your shoulder!

Agreed (even though I'm not 100% sure the end product comes from Russia - IPs tend to point to the USA, but as we all know, these things can be forged). Personally, I'd love to go to Russia - I have a thing for huge expanses of sub-artic nothingness and it'd be great to be able to explore. Odin piva, pezhalsta!

I agree. That is just stupid to think that this has anything to do with disgruntled posters. These idiopts are spammers and that's apparently what they live for. Buncha jerks.
