  • Invision Power Board and vBulletin

I was looking through IPB the other day and man... its features are almost identical to vBulletin. So, heres my question.. did IPB copy vBulletin's features or what happen? Why is IPB's latest version so similar in features to vBulletin? (like all that ajax stuff vb added into 3.5). Who copied who? I'm pretty sure vBulletin was first, but another forum software can just say "oh hey! let me just jack all of these features into mine"

At the risk of inflaming IPB trolls or start an IPB vs vB flame war, it's hard to argue which side is first or which side is copying.

However, features that are built into vBulletin are built because on the request of the userbase. I can't be certain in saying that for IPB as I don't have a license so I can't accurately represent them in that instance.

I agree with ManagerJosh. Anything that might have been "copied" is most likely from the users requests.

That's because IPS has their board set to delete older thread, unlike vB, which saves every thread.

Anyways, some things vB had first, and some things IPB had first. For example, vB had WYSIWYG text editors before IPB, but IPB had inline moderation before vB. At the end of the day, all that matters is that each product gets better because of the other.

I may be wrong Quillz, but I thought phpBB was the first major board distribution with Inline moderation...

EZ Board was. . <42 EZ Board's inline moderation. (I could be wrong though. But I still don't think phpBB has it.)

That was the major feature I missed when switching to vBulletin. That was the only thing though. .

I believe it's called evolution and natural product development - as defined by and demanded by users etc. These two products are at the top of the performance and functionality tree for available products at our budgets.

Funny this, but I saw a car, different make to mine, which had a steering wheel and a set of lights at the front. I wonder if they copied the design of the car I own?

OK, forgive me for a little sarcasm, but it illustrates the point yeah?

Not to mention that they all now have power-steering, but moving toward eletrically assisted steering.

It is a competative market (thankfully) and we write our own source code. Who has thought up the first of an option or feature is always hard to trace as the research & development files are not public.

I really do not think it matters to spend time on this .. if you require a forum software and certain features ....... pick the board that you think is best.

You'll come to the natrual conclusion this will be vBulletin

I meant between IPB and vB.

As pointed out, different boards may take different ideas from each other which they see and like (its called progress). It's give and take all round really. And all because one board might use a certain feature first, doesn't make it uneak to them to use forever only.

Otherwise you could argue, the first BB Board ever created was copied by every other BBBoard for sale now in that sence if you look at it like that. And I know vB and IPB were not the first.
