I did not see an apporpriate forum for my question, if there is please move this.

My question is what is the best way to limit guests on my board? I always have around 800 guests online and it bogs down my server. I know I could limit access to registered members only but I don't want to deter people from viewing the board, nor do I want to prevent spiders from crawling.

Any ideas or suggestions on what I can do other than those two options?

I recommend looking for something over at vbulletin.org regarding this. You'll probably have more luck there. Hope this helps!

You could use a .htaccess file uploaded to your ROOT and block all robots or just certain ones. From what I read it much effective than a robots.txt file for blocking spiders.

Your server CP Panel should give you the option to block IP's. If there are cetain spiders on your site that you know the IP range off. Add them via your CP Panel to the IP block list
