Don't buy a Dell for christmas

You know, I don't know if I can say this enough, especially during the Holidays, but I must reiterate this.

Please do not buy a Dell, unless you LOVE waiting 1-4 hours on hold for support (ranges of hold time I have been through), your warranty being ignored and a lot of Windows re-installed.

Now, when I say this, I am often asked, if not Dell, whom? Well, first off, definitely not eMachines. Every 3 out of 5 eMachines are duds. I wouldn't recommend building your own until you learn how. But, I would recommend the following brands:
    - Voodoo PC (if you can afford it. Site: http://www.voodoopc.com/ )
    - Hewlett-Packard
    - IBM

So, if you are getting someone a computer for x-mas, do them a favour. Don't get them a Dell.

So you're saying the saying really should be: Dude, [don't] get a Dell?

I've had nothing but awsome support from Dell...

I have a laptop, and several pc's from them, and for the price their systems are fairly top notch.

I won't touch HP, IBM has nice stuff, but they've got no style

Voodoo, like alienware, is a waste.

Yeah, but that guy's judgement was already impaired. He went to jail for doing drugs. Well, maybe he did those commercials while impared. I wouldn't wish a Dell on my worst enemies.

I wasn't ever planning to buy a pre-built system anyway. I did buy a 2001FP monitor from them and their sales line was entirely Indian for sure (damn outsourcing) but it's a fine product sans the one stuck pixel I finally noticed two weeks after receiving it.

With my new receiver, I can put S-Video and composite on either my TV (plus component) or the monitor, or both simultaneously. Combined with the built-in PIP feature, it has made me lazier.

edit: If you do want to get a Dell computer or anything from them, always look for one of the trillions of coupon codes they offer. You can save literally thousands or more. My 2001FP had an MSRP of $749 but after coupons, was $464. ($60 off $500 and some percent off that particular monitor).

I would never buy a PC from HP, its printer company now. My Dell that I got in 1998 is still runninng(turned it intoa MP3 server) and never had a problem with it.

I am on emachines for three years and it didn't break or didn't have any problem what so ever. May be its because I take good care of it, got anitvirus, firewall and so on. But in my opinion emachines is actually better.

They should really be called E*Trash.

Good for basic computing, but crap for everything else.

Antivirus and firewalls have nothing to do with the quality of parts inside your computer.

Or any off-the-shelf computer. Built your own and get the real deal (and quality parts that resale much better <-- you can make more off of them than just selling a Dell box 3 years later).

Our company switched from Dell to IBM, and couldn't be happier. IBM has some really cool utilities for imaging and restoring data. Not to mention they are durable! After 3 years, we collected 4 broken laptops of 150 that are currently outside of the actual office location. The new T42 14.1" is super thin, comes with finger recognition port. I think they're more suited for the corporate business environment than home use.
