  • Back in my day...

    Hey there,

Some days, I really wish there was an easy way to keep track of all the forums that I might want to keep track. Back in my day, there were off-line utilities that one could use to download new messages and reply to and/or start new messages. You usually used such utilities on WWIV boards, IIRC.

I imagine that there is no off-line utility that does this these days. The closest, I suppose, are forums that use RSS feeds for individual forums, but this doesn't allow replies. :-(

If you're really into forums and you zoom around a lot, how do you keep track?

Some days, I wish there was a utility like the old days.

I keep a bookmark for each of the forums I frequently visit.

Yeah, I guess that's the best.

I used to be active on many forums, and kept track of them through book marks. When that system failed I just quit with forums all together. When someone asks me what a good forum is all that comes to mind is vBulletin.com, Sitepoint, vBorg...and then I start stalling.

I totally forgot where I used to be a member at.

Why did your system fail? Seems like it's a good one!

I just use bookmarks, and set my site as my homepage...

Another idea I had was to use a custom startpage that listed all of sites I go to. When I click on a link, it'll open in an iframe to the right for quick access, when I want to "fully view" the site without an iframe, I just middle click into a new tab (using Firefox) or click on a "Open in New Window" link. I haven't tried this yet but it seems like it could work well...

You're thinking of .qwk packets. Do the names SLMR, Blue Wave, and Silver Express ring a bell? Usenet and a newsreader (you probably already own Outlook Express) still operate on roughly the same concept.

Usenet was all I used until fairly recently.

That's actually the process I use. Except I kind of get lazy and only update it about once every two months. =P
