WOW, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM is HUGE! What a heavy lens...
That's an amazing picture to show the size comparision between the two.

Kier, I think you have inspired me to really take up a new hobby...

Hopefully with enough practice, one day I'll be good enough to actually use and justify forking out $7,000 on a lens like that

Oh you like that pic? How about these...

This one shows the size of the front element of the 50mm f/1.8 against the front element of the 400mm f/2.8L

And this one shows the hood of the 400mm f/2.8 with a bunch of other not-particularly-small lenses swallowed up by it

Nope, this weighs double that one:

Price is apparently high 5 figures

The EF 600mm f/4L IS [spec] is slightly larger but slightly lighter than the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS [spec]. Those two are the biggest lenses Canon make that you can walk into a (very specialized) shop and buy.

The EF 1200mm f/5.6L is an extraordinary beast though you won't find it in any shops - Canon make them to special order and there is no fixed price for it - people have paid anything between $80k and $140k for that monster, the price apparently depending on how Canon feel at the time...

Whoa, it just keeps getting bigger and better

So Kier, can you point me to some specific pictures that you took using the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM?

I had a look at your galleries on the vB server, but have viewed the properties/details of only some of the pictures.

                    • What would one use such a humongous lense like the EF 1200mm f/5.6L for?
                      Best Regards

Nope, because I don't actually have it yet - it's currently with Mike in the USA (he took the pictures of it).

Wikipedia suggested there are only around 12 actually in existance. 2 are owned by a sports magazine and one by the guy who setup Oakley.

I wouldn't be surprised if National Geographic own one as well.

                            • This is my wishlist if I do go the 30D route. It all changes a bit if I go the 5D route.

                              http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/3CERNQOJIB70C

That would add to the things I already have that I would keep:

Canon EF 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM
                              Sigma (Macro) 150 2.8

Nah, the EF 500mm f/4L IS is a baby relative to the EF 400mm f/2.8 and the EF 600mm f/4L IS:

                                EF 500mm f/4L compared to EF 600mm f/4L
