So, do you ban free email accounts (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc) from registering on your forums? Just curious.

No. The majority of the users at my forum use free email accounts.

No... the majority of most people who visit forums sign up with free email accounts... banning free email accounts will just discourage members from signing up

No. I tried this for a while but my new registration dropped by over half and I ended you having to answer too many emails about this.

            Wow. I'm the only one.

I have not seen a drop in membership since I implemented it, but Spam is almost nil

Not much kids here can really afford another paying account email and most of their parents are hooked on forum and therfore their ISP email seems to be on private use of their parents so have to open up.

sighz.. Martin got almost nil spam, i recieve 1 - 2 every month without fail.

O agree with steve. It became too much of a hassle to reply to emails explaining why free emails were banned.

                  Copy/paste a generic reply?

Explain it on the registration page, like I did. Check out my registration page

lol. That doesn't do much good Martin. I have on my registration page "please do not register unless you intend to particpate in the forums". I get registrations still...and people don't particpate...lol

yes, but I explain very clearly why I don't accept free email registrations. I've not received much spam since then. Those spammers who do get through get added to the most vile and vulgar spam lists on the net. One member told me he wrote a mini-script to submit email addresses to about 500 or so different "alternate" porn mailing lists.

Out of my 23k members, maybe 2500 participate on a very regular basis. Probably 8,000 total post or browse per month.

No, have never had enough trouble with people that register with those accounts to warrant it.

Mildly on topic, and not directed at anyone, but if your site requires registration just to use the search, often that pisses me off enough to register and never post there. Or you have half your forums hidden to non-logged in users. Another annoyance.
