Google really needs to give one service and do it well, not branch into a ton of other services.

        Well let's see

Search - Probably the best there is
Ads - Doing really well currently

I don't see why they shouldn't add another service to generate revenue. They are doing relatively well with everything else

It's rare that google doesn't give me the answer I'm looking for. Perhaps it is your keyword selection or you are searching for very obscure specialist subjects.

Interesting to see if anything develops from this.
Well, from a financial perspective, I think it makes sense. Currently, their main source of income (99%) is from their advertising-related services.

While maybe not a logical choice, but offering online financial payment services can help Google diversify its income stream. Since it is already a household name (anybody ever watch the movie 'Hitch' and noticed the Google references?), Google can easily leverage its current popularity and try to squeeze into a market dominated primarily by PayPal.
                      :)

It's not gonna squeeze PayPal out. It's gonna push em out.

I am sure a lot of this is about micropayments.

Paypal is great for ebay payments, buying software and stuff from stores. For micropayment it is absolutly useless.

There are so so many business models out there that need to be able to make $0.01 payments to view a cartoon, or $0.05 for site access for a day etc. My guess is this is where google is heading.

Yeah. They're saving that for 10 years from now.

I would use google if they did come out with a service.
