No, it can only be said for companies that IPO and manage to get to high stock prices.

And speculation like this is rampant on Wall Street when a company IPO's and makes their employees a fortune.

Why is that? Microsoft seems to be getting tons of competition in plenty of areas, browsers, email, O/S, etc. Who's to say that one of their competitors might not gain most of the market, which means losses in Microsoft's shares?

    MGM out

The auction is closed but anyway I don't think I have had the chance to get one:

We have not undertaken any efforts to qualify this offering for offers to individual investors in any jurisdiction outside of the United States. Therefore, individual investors who are not U.S. persons should not expect to be eligible to participate in this offering.

https://www.ipo.google.com/ might help. Haven't read it properly though.

The same could be said for any company who has high stock prices. They're only making a big deal about it because it's Google.

The current employees of Google with shares will have to gamble on either selling now and making, say, $1 million and causing the problem descibed above. Or waiting to see if the new Google services like gmail etc can grow the company and increase the share value even further, so they can cash out at $2 million in 12 months time.

Their counter argument is that 1m might not be enough to retire.
But hell, it will do just fine to work for a smaller company for just a day in the week to pay the bills and enjoy the 1m in stock from time to time to live life large.
