  • Question about portal software ?

    Hello.

I didn't really know what forum to post this question in. I did a search and found several older threads that discussed portal software. I didn't really understand much of it... So, I'll understand it this thread gets moved.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I have already:

    1. Purchased a domain.
    2. Purchased a server.
    3. Purchased, installed, and adjusted settings for vBulletin.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't really know what to do next. I don't know how to set up my website.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I basically want is a front page with a title, rules, and a link to my bulletin board. (Is this where PORTAL software comes into play?)

If this is what I need, can anybody suggest a program that is:

    1. Easy to install and use (basically dummy-proof).
    2. From a company that offers good customer and technical support.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE and THANK YOU for some advice!!!

    Mechanical Mind.

PS - I am a newbie with everything COMPUTER! So remember that you are talking to a layperson.

The most simple solution for a web site that your guests and members see before they enter the message boards is creating one in simple .html files. This is not dynamic, and less flexible. But it is a great (temporary) solution.

If you don't mind to manually update the news on the web site index.html then it would be a matter of updating 1 index.html file and uploading it when you have new news.

That page could hold links to the message board and other static information.

You can create such a page rather quickly using MacroMedia Dreamweaver (they have a 30 days trail version).

However, if you prefer to do more, generate dynamic and flexible - template driven pages then you end up with a software that we call 'content management system' or 'portal' , 'frontpage' solutions. There are a few of these released for free for licensed vBulletin members over at the resource web site vBulletin.org - vB Index, vB Advanced, vB Portal, and alike. They are not supported by Jelsoft, vBulletin. Because they are third party scripts written by customers.

For starters, like I did, having your web site in just .html files sometimes is the easy solution until you mastered and learned how and what about CMS/Portal/etc.

    Good luck!

      Ok

Thank you for your response Floris.

I need a basic portal. I just need a program that will do the following:

      1. Show the title of my website.
      2. Offer a brief description of my website.
      3. Display the bulletin board rules.
      4. Provide a link to the bulletin board.
      5. Only allow registered visitors to post. (? A registration process ?)

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does vBulletin 3.0.3 handle registering users or is that something that a portal would do?

      Thanks.

      Mechanical Mind.

With just .html file, you can put in the title of your web site, forum, etc. Display a description/introduction and list the board rules. You can add links to your forum and paste a link to register.php so users can register.

In order to post ON the frontpage, you indeed need to integrate with vbulletin.

Here is a sloppy .html page you can make.

            Thanks Floris.

            You are the bomb.

Now I see how it works. I'll try to modify that and see what happens.

            Mechanical Mind.

PS - That .html you constructed for me is so content-rich, I may just use that for my portal. ! (Joke)

BTW, I see the words copywrite info in that .html that you constructed.

Is this something that I need to consider, copywriting my website???

Copy and paste the code ans save it as index.html, upload that to your server. Then rename vbulletin's index.php file to home.php or similar and via the ACP change the script name accordingly. This will allow your system to display / or index.html as your portal and home.php as your forum homepage.

As time goes on and you get more comfertable with coding and php you can use a static page with cron files to update data. If you check out www.scubaboard.com/matrix/ you will see my portal system which is simply a static file that is rebuilt via cron to keep the data nice and fresh while retaining the benefits of static loaded pages.
