Microsoft XP SP2 and WUS delays confirmed

    WUS up, doc?

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 13 July 2004, 07:56

WROUGHT IRON SPECIALIST Microsoft has announced that its Windows Update Services release will now be delayed until early next year and its much awaited SP2 upgrade will stay in purdah until August.

Windows Update Services (WUS) was supposed to ship at the end of Autumn with its beta supposed to arrive sometime about now. Apparently the final beta will not appear until later in the year. SP2 which was supposed to be out in June now has a release date for August. Spinsters at Vole apologised for the delay and regretted the inconvience caused.

Mike Nash, Microsoft vice president for security, told Reuter that his group needed more time to ensure that the update was stable and would work with other programs when installed on personal computers running Windows XP.

Sources in the lair of the Vole in Redmond said that the reason for the WUS delay was that customers who tested the initial beta came back with loads of suggested changes.

They also wanted to jack in a new Automatic Updates agent which will not see the light of day until the much delayed SP2 upgrade. The real truth is that the Volesters are now working hammer and tongs to get WinXP 64 out. But sssh, don't tell anyone. µ

I'll be surprised if SP2 stays on schedule...

How many times has XP SP2 been delayed now?
Oh well at least when it’s finally released most of the bugs should have been solved

Fine with me... just let them iron out the bugs and improve things. It's not like XP + SP1 is a bug ridden piece of ****; it works great as it is, if they need some more time to make SP2 even better then well, why not?

Not if you install all the patches and updates, as you should.

Patches are released after a vunerability is discovered and usually exploited, too late for many.

Actually a lot of the patches were released before any exploits. Remember the Nimda worm? There was a patch available well before the worm got out. But seeing as a lot of people are too lazy to patch their system...

I really hope so, if you are fixing bugs before you discover them something is wrong .
