Does anybody know of a way to install and run the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...rdclientdl.asp) without administrator privileges?

Not sure if this is what you want, but, hold shift and right click on the installer, and click Run As... and then type in the admin account.

This is my global campus account so I only have access to my current account.

(and before somebody jumps in, I am using this for perfectly innocent purposes)

Not sure you can, if XP Pro/Home is already installed on the machine, it does come on the machine already.

If you have another server connected to the internet running IIS, you can install a web page that will allow you to download/run an ActiveX control to connect via RDP without installing the client software (which you can't do without local admin rights).

                Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

I've been offered a private solution, but if there are more ideas, keep 'em coming.

                      Here's The Answer

Well I did some work in the system32 folder and I managed to get RDC running without installing the Client. Here's what you need. All you need are these 3 files to run the Remote Desktop Client without installing and without admin rights:

mstsc.exe >> The actual Remote Desktop Client Executable.
mstscax.dll >> The Terminal Services ActiveX Client
netrap.dll >> The Net Remote Admin Protocol DLL

Now I know that MSTSC.EXE and MSTSCAX.DLL are definitely needed, but as for NETRAP.DLL, I'm not sure. I took it out just in case it was needed. I was able to open RDC Client without it, but I like to be safe and not sorry, besides, its only a 12KB file.

Well as long as you have the files in the same directory you can run the EXE and connect to your desktop remotely without installing and without admin access.

The total size of all 3 files comes to 1.02MB. If you ZIP or RAR it, then you end up with a file of about 450KB. I'll upload the RAR here to the post. It is in two parts:

                      rdc.part1.rar.zip <-- rename to rdc.part1.rar
                      rdc.part2.rar.zip <-- rename to rdc.part2.rar
                      Attached Files

Excellent, once I scan the files and have an opportunity, I will try it out.

Well that makes me feel trusted

I understand though I would have scanned it too.

Nothing personal of course, but anytime I see a RAR extension, I am always careful due to its notoriety in file sharing (and its crushing superiority to worthless zips...WinRAR trounces WinZip).

I was using ZIP at first, but the compression wasnt near as good as RAR. I used .ZIP at the end just to make it uploadable to the forum.
