I'm curious, do you hide your forums to non-registered users? And if so, what incentive do you give them to register? How do they know that it's something they want to be involved in if they can't get a glimpse of what is going on? I can see making it read only to non-registered users... or even not allowing them to access the forums, but allowing them to see the forum headings so that they know what they are missing, but I just don't see going to a board as a non-registered user and seeing nothing, or seeing nothing but an announcements forums and/or comment box and wanting to join. I have no incentive.

I have a photo ratings site like hot or not. The script was modified so that when people who were not logged into the site clicked on the forum link, they just got redirected back to the ratings site. After a month because of thie so many people who visited didn't know there were any forums at all. I now changed the script to allow anyone who clicks on the forum link goes to the forums. They just can't register directly on the forums, they have to register on the ratings site instead, then they are registered on both.

I have one forum that has no restrictions. Anyone can post in all forums.
The other 2 you have to be registered to post, but, you can view all forums.

To post in all of my forums (except one) you must be registered.
The one that anyone can post in is the "Spam R Us" forum.| DiscBurn | CD & DVD Replication services, film and VHS to DVD, and duplication equipment
| Disc On Demand | Short-run CD & DVD duplication... all online.

One of my forums is strictly private - registration is disabled - guests can't view forums, etc. Why? Well.. because its a private board for a small group of friends of mine, and I don't want strangers popping in.
Heck... the main page of the domain is even blank.
Privacy is all about that board.
