Definitly style 1; much easier to read and more pleasent to the eye.
I like the default buttons from style 14 more then the new ones in style 1 though. I mean; the top_menu.gif buttons. -
I agree with xiphoid. The second one is OK except for that nasty eye stabbing background colour. You've got icons there with a white background so to make it look right you should really either change the page background to white or make the icon backgrounds transparent. Same thing with the grey tables. The extra white bits look out of place. Could look really good with a bit of minor tweaking.

I've created my own custom dark template, with a black background. I've been able to figure out most of what I need. However, there is one I assume needs a custom setting to override.

Folks, what file do I need to edit in order to change the background of my page? It's currently using the standard, default grey background and I'd like to spruce it up a bit using Fireworks.
