  • vBulletin Table Sizes Blowing Up My Format URGENT!!!

    Hi everyone. Please help.

    I am using a format with my vBulletin that limits the horizontal size of the page. When internal elements expand beyond those boundaries, things start looking really bad.

    On all of these pages, keep your eyes on the left & right margins when I have the one pixel border. This is where you will see the error.

    Here is the main index for my forum: http://www.nwdiver.com/forums/index.php You will see that everything looks correct.

    In cp/templates, I have Main Table Width & Content Table Width set at 745 px which should theoretically work just fine with room to spare. In fact, as you can see on the home page, it does.

    However, once you start getting into the forum, things begin to explode. I can't figure out why.

    One you view the thread index, you can see a minor problem with the format, the right margin is being pushed out by a couple of pixels. Here is an example: http://www.nwdiver.com/forums/forumd...p?s=&forumid=8
    not much of a problem, but confusing, especially whn I examine the code using view source - the main tables are all 745 pixels, and the inline tables are all 100%. NOTE: if I go in to the CP and change those tables to 500 px, these tables in the forum will look EXACTLY the same.

    Now to see this REALLY blow up, click on one of the threads. This is where things make so little sense to me that I almost do not know how to describe the problems. First, below the header, everything seems to be showed 10 pixels to the left, and offset. This should be impossible, because the header and the body are all part of the same table structure. In the meantime, my 11 px margin disappears until further down the page, and when it reappears on the right, something is blowing things open, looks like a cellpad value had been added somehow.

    I am on deadline here. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I am not a coder. I am a graphic designer / HTML guy just learning PHP, so be gentle.

    One final, unrelated note, on the main forum home page, it it possible to easily turn off the moderator column, but have mods display on the thread index page?

    Thanks all in advance.

    PS - if anyone is so inclined, you can see my original template here: http://www.nwdiver.com/library/templates/forum.php

    some pages stop and restart the content table. for example, your showthread pages stop and restart the content table for each post. to fix that you need to edit your showthread template - Admin CP -> Templates -> Modify -> [expand list] -> Show Thread Templates -> showthread. you need to remove the following code blocks from that template, there is one instance of each:

    Code:
    <!-- End content area table (CREATED IN HEADER!!) -->
    	</td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    Code:
    <!-- restart content table from header -->
    <table cellpadding="10" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="{tablewidth}" bgcolor="{pagebgcolor}" align="center">
    <tr>
        <td>
    if you come accross any other page that do this just edit their templates like above.

      Thanks for the response.

      It's better, but there are still problems.

        in the actual thread page, seems like most of what is going wrong has to do with everything being shifted to the left, which is so bizarre...

          Still Needing Assistance With Template (PLEASE!)

          See: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...threadid=50365

          I am still trying to sort out this problem. The suggested solution helped, but did not remedy the situation completely. Is there anyone out there willing to spend a few minutes and really help me SOLVE this problem?

          I don't know what else to add, other than PLEASE.

          You will find a comprehensive description, with links, in the aforementioned post.

          Thanks

            to center everything you need to add center tags to your header and footer templates. at the top of your header template add <center> . then at the bottom of your footer template add </center>

              But the originals are not centered. They are left justified. Like I said, the thing that makes this most wierd is that there is a 10 pixel spacer which seems to be almost shoved off the page to the right...

              That and the table which contains BOTH cells does not break, yet it appears as if the two are almost completely different sections.

                  Totally Frustrated

                  Ok. I will be the first to admit that my hacking and coding skills aren't that great. However, this problem is still blowing up some of my pages!

                  More frustrating, when I do a search for these strings (or portions of them) that need to be removed, the only thing that comes up in the template search function is "Showthread" yet that template has been edited and the information deleted long ago!!!

                  Yet when I do a view source on the finished page in IE, there is that pesky code again.

                  I am even using the vBulletin option to show templates in the source code for troubleshooting purposes, still no dice. WHERE IS THIS FRICKIN CODE COMING FROM!? And - how do I delete it!

                    I have no idea what you're talking about. Sorry. Perhaps you should revert all you templates back to original and start over.

                      You know, it would be really helpful if you READ the thread before responding. This is why it has taken the better part of 2 months to solve this problem, and it's still not solved!

                      I'm sorry to be rude, but I need an answer. A month ago.

                      Here's the code I am referring to.

                      Code:
                      <!-- End content area table (CREATED IN HEADER!!) -->
                      	</td>
                      </tr>
                      </table>
                      Code:
                      <!-- restart content table from header -->
                      <table cellpadding="10" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" align="center">
                      <tr>
                          <td>
                      So - I deleted this code. I have also searched for it using the Admin CP and I cannot find any examples of it anywhere else in ANY template.

                      However, my pages are still blowing up. Here's an example:
                      http://www.northwestdiver.com/forums...=&threadid=446

                      See how the left margin is totally shoved to the right? This should not be happening!!!

                      But then I look at the source code.

                      Look what is still there!

                      Code:
                      <!-- /breadcrumb, nav links -->

                      <a name="posttop"></a>

                      <!-- End content area table (CREATED IN HEADER!!) -->
                      	</td>
                      </tr>
                      </table>

                      <!-- spacer -->
                      <table bgcolor="#FFFFFF" width="710 px" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
                      <tr><td width="10"><img width="10" height="1" src="images/space.gif" alt=""></td><td width="100%">
                      <!-- /spacer -->
                      What is generating this HTML? I cannot find it anywhere - in any template. Apparently this is a known bug... but this is now completely beyond my ability to do anything about it without assistance. PLEASE HELP!

                        Of course I read the previous messages.

                        Jake already told you this comes from the showtread template. Have you tried reverting that template back to original and starting over again?

                          yes. Still no change.

                          Does the program cache information at all? Seems like some of the changes I make, like this one, are being ignored. Others seem to work correctly.

                            The program doesn't cache the web pages but your browser and/or ISP may be doing that.

                              No - I checked with the ISP, and I am testing on three different browsers on two different operating systems - and I do know how to clear the cache.

                              I have saved these files and they are available for you to look at.

                              http://www.northwestdiver.com/vbprob...ad_edited.html

                              As you can see, the code that needs to be deleted, HAS been deleted. Yet the problem still exists. Beyond this, I do not know how to restore the original code.

                              If you go into the site, http://www.northwestdiver.com/forums/ you will notice that the home page displays correctly. If you click on one of the main thread links, those indexes display correctly as well. However, anything deeper than that looks like crap, as the problem comes back.

                              Following the instructions provided from the beginning of this thread only fixed these few pages.

                              I would refer you back to that original solution post:

                              So this wierd code exists somewhere else? I certainly cannot find it.

                              If you view the source code on my thread pages - example: http://www.northwestdiver.com/forums...s=&postid=2511 - you will clearly see the mysterious code is back again... but before I can delete it from the appropriate template - I need to know where to look.

                              Also, it seems there are at least two problems here, not just one.

                              Just above <!-- thread options links --> you will again see

                              <!-- restart content table from header -->

                              And a corresponding worse break in the HTML that is generated.

                              If you want, I will be more than happy to give you an admin account if you can help me solve the problem. If I am not explaining this problem, tell me how I can be more specific for you.
