  • Getting a skin done?

So can you ask people to develop some skins for a forum - then pick from the submitted demo pages the best one, continue with that designer and agree a price to do the full job?

Or does it not usually work like that?

    Thanks in advance

Some designers do offer clients a choice of a few different layouts. (E.g., I usually offer up to three.) If that's something you'd like, be sure you pick a designer willing to do that. Usually they'll ask you to sign a contract first, for their safety. After all, what if they've done all this work for three designs and you don't pay?

While you're at it, make certain that you trust the designer's skills and professionalism. Ask for referrals and check out the sites in the designer's portfolio. And pay attention to how well s/he communicates with you and listens to what you say.

For another option, you might start a contest at SitePoint or similar sites. You won't be as certain of the outcome, since the people who enter aren't always 'vetted' for reliability. Still, you'll get a broader number of possible design ideas, and you can often check the entrants' past work. If you do this, make sure you follow the site's rules. You'll want to keep the option open to close the contest without a winner if none of the design entrees suits you.

Ooh before I forget, do please clarify to the designer whether you want/need them to do the coding as well. Some designers can create a stunning layout but don't know vB code well and prefer not to to implement it 'live'. Often, though, they can recommend someone to code for you.

    Good luck!
