PM icon gradient, messed up?

When i try to edit the gradient of a few PM icons, the color fills the whole icon, not just the background, its not sticking to the lines... anyone else having this problem, i use a old version of photoshop, v4.0 (dont have the $$ to upgrade).

well i dunno about photoshop 4..i know is 6 if you hold ctrl and then select the layer you want to fill...it will outline the coloring on that layer. that's how i did it

I use 5.5, and it works that way also.
